In this discussion, you will create a presentation from the point of view of two specific professionals who are experts on the topic you selected in Week One for your Final Project.  For this discussion:  Topic for this is Child Psychology

  • Consider the psychological career alternatives available and determine from which fields of expertise your two points of view will come.
  • Select the two professionals you will use with expertise on the topic you selected.  Your professionals’ identity may be based on a real person that you know, or they may be made-up based on the job description of a professional in the field.  The titles of your professionals should represent actual jobs (based on job descriptions) from categories in two different areas of mental health (e.g., psychiatry and psychology, social work and counseling).
  • In one or two sentences, briefly introduce your experts by describing their current careers as well as their backgrounds. The experts will be providing scholarly information on your selected topic based on the point-of-view of their respective professions.
Provide evaluations from the experts in the course of the presentation, regarding contributions of psychological research on the chosen topic in an applied context.
  • Include information from at least two peer-reviewed articles that were published within the last five years to substantiate your experts’ claims.  You must select these two articles on your own.  You may not use resources listed within this course.  For information on how to generate search terms for specific resources, visit the Ashford University Library.

To begin, create a presentation using the Sample Presentation Template, of at least five slides (not including the title and reference slides).  Provide the following elements in your presentation:

  • A side-by-side comparison of your experts including their current careers as well as their backgrounds
  • A brief general explanation of the topic chosen in Week One
  • Provide a slide for each of the experts’ points of view including appropriate citations of your referenced resources
  • A brief overview and comparison of the two experts’ points of view
  • A separate reference slide must be included at the end of the presentation
  • A minimum of three scholarly sources published within the last five years must be included in the discussion. References are cited according to APA guidelines.
  • A link to a website from an organization associated with each expert’s profession.  Include information from that website where the corresponding expert is presenting her or his point of view. Include the websites in the reference slide using the full APA citation format for websites Do not just copy and paste the URL to the website.
  • Use the sample template provided to organize your presentation. You may change the font sizes in the presentation. However, do not use a font smaller than 20 pt. You are encouraged to insert relevant figures and graphics. Make sure to appropriately cite any images you use that you did not create yourself. If you include a table or figure from a journal article, cite it according to APA guidelines

Next, create a 3 to 5 minute oral video presentation of your presentation using a screencast program such as Jing or Screencast-O-Matic. You may also use YouTube or a voiceover PowerPoint saved as a video file with audio. The maximum time allowed for your presentation is 5 minutes, so practicing your presentation prior to recording it is highly recommended

  • Please include a title for your presentation in the description box when you publish your oral video presentation.

Finally, copy and paste the URL link to your oral video presentation (screencast or video file) in your discussion forum response section.

  • Your presentation must utilize at least two scholarly peer-reviewed resources, in addition to your textbook, cited in APA format as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • All references used within the presentation must be cited properly within the slides and included on the required reference slide, which will be the last slide within your presentation.
  • Due to the time limit of your presentation video, you are not required to speak or read through the reference list. However, you must include your reference list within the discussion post along with the URL link to your presentation and submit your presentation via doc sharing.

Assignment 1: Discussion—Denial as a Defense Mechanism

Assignment 1: Discussion—Denial as a Defense Mechanism

Denial is one of the most challenging defense mechanisms used by individuals with addictions. This term has been familiar to the substance abuse treatment nomenclature for many decades. It applies when a substance abuser denies the existence or severity of his or her problem. Treatment for clients in denial is typically challenging. In these cases, the focus of intervention is on helping the client acknowledge the problem. The only way treatment will be successful is if the client recognizes the existence or extent of the substance abuse.

The contemporary perspective is that denial occurs in the “pre-contemplative” stage of the change process (Prochaska, DiClemente, & Norcross, 1992). The denial of clients in this stage is not confronted as it was in older forms of treatment. It is viewed as a necessary beginning on the journey to sobriety. Addressing the denial requires encouraging the client to identify the ill effects as well as the perceived benefits of his or her substance abuse. The client in this stage will attempt to work toward finding internal motivation to change based on the insight gained about the effects of his or her use pattern.

Use the module readings and the Argosy University online library resources to research denial used as a defense mechanism.

Download and review the case study.

Respond to the following:

  • 1. How is the use of denial by the substance-abusing client evident in the case
  • 2. What other ways might substance-abusing individuals display denial
  • 3. What approaches could you use to work with the client in the case study

Support your responses using your module readings and authoritative resources. Incorporate theory and factual information in your response.

Write your initial response in 2–3 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

***HINTS AND HELP***

Hi, class

***HINTS AND HELP******HINTS AND HELP***

As you look at the issue of “denial”, remember that what we are talking about is an initial refusal to believe or self-examine.  Traditional wisdom was that the pain wasn’t enough, the person had not “hit bottom” and so had no motivation to change — yet.  I like to think that we can positively influence clients with our questions that help them clarify what it is they want, and what they don’t want — and help them sort short-term and long-term needs and wants.

Answer this thread by answering the questions.  This should run about 150 words, roughly. (Longer is OK, shorter is not.)  Cite and reference.

Introduction

Denial is the refusal to accept reality or fact, acting as if a painful event, thought or feeling did not exist. It is considered one of the most primitive of the defense mechanisms because it is characteristic of early childhood development. Many people use denial in their everyday lives to avoid dealing with painful feelings or areas of their life they don’t wish to admit. For instance, a person who is a functioning alcoholic ………

Introduction

Reality shows such as “American Idol” and “Apprentice” have almost no physical violence, but a new study suggests their rampant displays of name-calling and snarky gossiping still make for a much meaner TV-viewing experience compared with watching fictional TV shows. The realistic portrayal of aggression on reality TV shows might even encourage viewers to imitate the non-physical aggression in real life, according to some theories. That verbal or relational aggression typically slips past TV-rating systems and media watchdog groups, which focus instead on condemning the  of gunfights and fisticuffs. “All of these reality shows would never receive a rating of violence or aggression from the current rating systems,” said Sarah Coyne, a psychologist at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and lead researcher on the new study………..

Write a paper (1,250-1,500 words) in which you discuss both the phenomenological research methods in psychology that emerged from the philosophies of Husserl and Heidegger and the theorists/psychologists who developed those methods.

  Phenomenological Research Methods

Details:

The quest to understand the lived experience and the philosophical structures of experience and consciousness is the focus of a movement that began in the early years of the 20th Century. The movement is called phenomenology because the movement explores the lived experience of phenomena. Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger were two of the prominent philosophers who developed this method of inquiry though each took a significantly different philosophical approach to understanding human experience. In this assignment, you will discuss the psychology research methods that emerged from the philosophies of Husserl and Heidegger and the researchers who developed those methods.

General Requirements:

  • This assignment requires that at least three scholarly research sources related to this topic, and at least two in-text citation from each source be included.

Directions:

Write a paper (1,250-1,500 words) in which you discuss both the phenomenological research methods in psychology that emerged from the philosophies of Husserl and Heidegger and the theorists/psychologists who developed those methods. Include the following in your paper

  1. A discussion of at least two phenomenological research methods that emerged from the phenomenological philosophy of Husserl. What were the central tenets of each method? What is known about the theorists/psychologists who      developed each method?
  2. A discussion of at least two phenomenological research methods that emerged from the phenomenological philosophy of Heidegger. What were the central tenets of each method? What is known about the theorists/psychologists who developed each method
  3. A contrast of the primary differences among the phenomenological research methods identified above. How does each method address approaches to data gathering, data analysis, and the role of the researcher?
  4. A research-based statement of and rationale for the method you believe allows the best understanding of human experience

Introduction

What factors affect physical development?

Physical development and growth are influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. For example, malnutrition can delay a child’s physical development significantly. On the other hand, according to the University of Minnesota, the role of some environmental factors, such as the amount of exercise the child is getting, has a much smaller effect on physical development than was previously thought. Genetics When a child is born, he has a unique set of genetic instructions that influence his physical growth. According to the University of Minnesota, genetics have a strong effect on rate of growth, the size of body parts and the onset of growth events. In one study, Dr. Stefan A. Czerwinski and colleagues followed their subjects for thirty years. By using such parental measurements as height and weight, these scientists were able to predict quite accurately the approximate height and weight of their subjects at the age of thirty. Other factors….
